Style Military Watch
There are several watches in the market that use plastic facings on their watch faces. One very famous brand is Swatch, a brand which makes sports watches which use high quality acrylic facings on its watch faces. Those watches are trendy, light weight and cheaper too, so quite a few people do buy them for personal use. These sports models last for a long time and are frequently supplied with interchangeable straps and cases. There is nothing really bad about that except that plastic and acrylic facings are subject to cracks and scratches much more easily than glass.
If you aren’t really sure what type of watch facing your watch, one easy method of reference is to hold the watch face against your cheek. Acrylic watch facings always feel warm, while glass and sapphire crystals always feel cold even if you have been wearing them for a long period of time. Acrylic crystals are commonly used on several varieties of utility watches too like sports, military, diving and a few models of dress watches like some models of Rolexes.
The acrylic gets scratched very easily but it does not shatter into pieces like other crystals. As a result over a certain time period, the overlying acrylic crystal gets cloudy and opaque with scratches and you will not be able to use it. Replacing the acrylic crystal is a good idea but it will turn out to be really expensive as the glass gets scratched frequently; especially if you wear your watch to jobs which require a lot physical effort and exertion.
Replacing the watch crystal is also not an option for watches which come with a fused casing. That means that the crystal cannot be removed. Quite a few acrylic watches which were made as limited editions memorabilia for special occasions come in this variety. I personally have ten Disney editions of cartoon characters released on animation movie premiers! As the crystal cannot be removed, the watch faces look dull and useless. Whenever, I wanted to use these watches, I used to spray the watch face with WD-40 and the surface was fine for the day. But eventually the scratches would reappear and the watch face would get cloudy again. But recently watchmakers have come up with a revolutionary new product called as Polywatch which works as a polish on scratched watch faces. Using the product is pretty simple and within 15 minutes the watch facing is clear as new glass. Here’s how you use it-
Polywatch is available in tubes with polishing cloth to be used with it. Apply the paste on the surface for a few minutes. Use a rubbing motion to rub the paste in to the scratches and to level the grooves on the surface. Deeper surface grooves may require repeat applications. Check after every five minutes. Try to keep your rubbing motion at right angles to the surface. Each tube of 10 ml can be used more than ten times
Voila, a brand new looking acrylic facing for half the servicing cost!
