Black Onyx is a form of quartz that is also known as chalcedony. The name chalcedony is derived from the port of Calcedon. It was believed that this gem was first mined on those shores. The use of stone in the Bible
In the Bible, the stone is one of the twelve precious stones used in the breastplate of judgment of the high priest Aaron as written in the book of Exodus 35:9 “and onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece”. The onyx stone in the breastplate is the last stone that was used on the second row of Aaron’s breastplate.
