Chronograph Two Wrist Watch
Last year, we witnessed the introduction of two thick movements by Panerai. One was 8mm thick, and the other even reached 10mm. And most surprisingly, they were used as a base calibres that needed to add modules. For example, you need to add 2mm for the glass, 5mm for case and another 3mm for the GMT or chronograph module. Then, you make an obese burger out of it.
And now, nearly one year later, Panerai starts to introduce thinner movement P.999 for their new watch models. And the P.999 is just 3.4mm at thickness, a very reasonable size to add other modules. And you are free of the worry that you are going to make big burgers again.
The P.999 is able to store nearly 60 hour power reserve. Less than three days though, it is already 50% more than the Unitas that applied in the hand-wound low range Panerai watches. The construction is not new but still it can be regarded as an evolution like all modern movements nowadays with contemporary look. I am so impressed by its refined looking that I can wait to see the finished model at the upcoming SIHH 2010.
With no question, P.999 has great looks.It receives fine finishes while being modern and simple. And I am glad to see that the Panerai Radiomir (PAM00336) has the honor to first house this movement. But the return to resized 42mm rose gold case is not novel. To my knowledge, previous gold Radiomir watches did not sell due to the ultra-high price tag. I suggest you wait for a steel Panerai with the P.999 if you are not that into gold watches.
I also wonder that is if the P.999 will completely replace the Unitas movements at Panerai. But considering the production of P.999 is limited, which means the supply is far from enough to replace all Unitas in a short term, we have to wait quite a time to see P.999 has its day.
