When was the last time you watched an MMA fight? It seems that whenever I watch a fight, I am just amazed at just how quick these fighters are. Everything seems like second nature to them. It truly is an art and it is just awesome to watch. That being said, I wanted to share you with a tip that I have picked up here and there.
How to set an arm bar -
1. The easiest way to perform an effective arm bar is while you are on your back. This is also known as the “closed guard”.
2. With your left hand, grab your opponents right wrist. With your right hand, grab on to your opponents right elbow. Once you have secured their arm, start to push off the ground with your hips. This pulls your opponents arms creating additional pressure.
3. As you are bringing your hips off the ground, roll to your right side while attempting to bring your opponent close to you. Because you are in the closed guard, your legs should already be wrapped around his or her waist.
4. Quickly release your legs and bring them up to your opponent’s head. Your left leg should know be on your opponent’s right shoulder. This will continue to hold them down from escaping.
5. Now with your left hand (keeping your left leg on their shoulder), start pushing their right shoulder to keep them from escaping. As you push, bring your left leg around his or her face. Once your leg is over their face, bring your hips up again. This will create pressure on their arm forcing them to tap out!
Now all of these steps come together rather quickly (maybe 15-20 seconds or so) basically stunning your opponent. How many times have you seen this executed before the opponent even realized what had happened! It is a quick, but yet very effective technique. If implemented properly, you can virtually tap out anyone!
The key to this on of many UFC techniques is repetition. If you are going to do an arm bar fluidly, it takes lots of practice. It should second nature to you. Once you identified the opportunity, you should react and get that arm bar set before your opponent can even try to defend it!
